Lake Ouachita / Mount Ida Area

Lake Ouachita - Covering over 49,000 acres, Lake Ouachita is the state's largest manmade lake and, according to the EPA, one of the top three cleanest lakes in the United States. The reservoir is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the shoreline covers some 970 miles. Deer, black bear, wild turkey and other wildlife roam the surrounding forest and the lake provides a wintering home for many eagles. You can enjoy the crystal clear waters by swimming, scuba diving, water skiing, sailing, and fishing. Visitors may choose from a variety of accommodations from luxury lake view condominiums to rustic cabins or inexpensive motel offerings.

Floating with canoes and rafts - The Ouachita and Caddo rivers are two of the best "family outing" rivers in the state for floating with canoes and rafts. Floaters experience beautiful scenery, wildlife, clean water, and good fishing as the rivers flow past forested hillsides, pastures and massive rock bluffs. Canoe outfitters offer a variety of services on both rivers for the experienced or beginner.

Hiking & Mountain Biking - There are 480 miles of hiking trails in and around the Ouachita Mountains. The Womble Trail is a thirty-eight mile single track ideal for hiking or mountain biking. It is rated one of the best in the country where sanctioned mountain bike races are held in May. The Ouachita National Recreation Trail is the longest trail in the Ouachita National Forest spanning 192 miles across its entire length. For more information, you may purchase a detailed map at all Ouachita National Forest offices or the Mount Ida Area Chamber of Commerce.
