Sixty-three percent of the 805 square miles compromising Montgomery County is part of the Ouachita National Forest. Population density is less than 10 people per square mile. This is your land. Montgomery County is located in the west central part of the state of Arkansas and is near the center of the Ouachita National Forest. It is upland, being on the eastern slope of the Ouachita Mountains. The Ouachita National Forest is the south's oldest and largest National Forest covering 1.6 million acres. The lakes, mountains, ridges, and streams are truely paradise for nature lovers. Montgomery County, named in honor of General Richard Montgomery, was organized under the provisions of an act of the General Assembly of the State of Arkansas on December 9, 1842. Montgomery County was formed from territory taken from Hot Springs County.

The population of Montgomery County is approximately 8,184 while Mount Ida homes 924. Of the 8,184 people, approximately 1,683 are currently employed. The remaining are children and retired persons. The major source of income is cattle, swine, poultry, timber, mining and tourism. The average rainfall is 4.6 inches, average snowfall is 4 inches, and average temperature is 68 degrees F. The low real estate prices, nominal tax and license fees, moderate living expenses and low crime rate make this area a wonderful place to retire.
